Rocky Mountain High - Colorado

Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high

He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend but kept his memory

Now he walks in quiet solitude in the forest and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake

And the Colorado rocky mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply
Rocky mountain high

Lyrics - John Denver.

I became aware of John Denver much later than most, and when I did I was amazed at the deepness of his love of nature - how he seemed so at peace and so at one with the wilderness  - while still retaining a sense of awe and reverence.   When I sensed his essence I immediately felt simpatico with this part of him.

Earlier this month I spent time in the Rockies, staying in  Breckenridge, then traveling through Vail, Independence Pass, and Aspen then finally to Boulder and Denver.  I must admit cities were hard for me to take after experiencing the mountains.

We drove through Independence Pass just a couple of weeks before it was to be closed for the rest of the season, However the mountain tops were already glistening white, and it was really really cold...   (I know the locals would laugh at me for saying that!!!)

Descriptions fail me when trying to capture the essence of this incredible landscape so I will leave that to the poets, artists, writers and musicians who do that so well..

It was a much wanted/needed change of scenery, and a recharging of the batteries.   I made a wish on a star in Colorado that I would come back to explore and discover and enjoy the beauty of this magnificent mountain range again.  Maybe it will happen when  the stars are aligned,  or when there is a gentle whisper on the wind telling me now is the time - or maybe an owl will be hooting on the night of a full moon and I will know. Or... ???

It all seems somehow beautifully surreal!

  1. Oh, I loved Independence Pass... such an intense drive in an RV, and SO beautiful. Even in June, the snow was deep up there.

  2. Ooooooh!!! 10 mph hairpin turns in an RV... wow... it was hard to do in a car!!! ha ha... but well worth every minute of "white knuckling" silent prayers, holding breath and promises to God. :)
